Isle of Wight gets 24-hour marriage licence

Couples who have their heart set on a romantic wedding on the Isle of Wight have a new option after a regulation change affecting island venues was confirmed.

The introduction of a new law means brides and grooms will be able to walk down the aisle 24 hours a day, opening up the possibility of a midnight ceremony on the Isle of Wight.

Corporate governance manager at the Isle of Wight Council Chris Mathews stated the decision to overhaul the registrar system on the island in 2010 was made with this change in legislation in mind, reports the Isle of Wight County Press.

"Having increased the number of registrars from seven to 16, we are already geared up to respond to the new opportunities arising from it," he was quoted as saying by the news provider, adding there has never been a greater selection of ceremony venues on the island from which to choose for couples who want to get married on the Isle of Wight.

Some 34 venues on the Isle of Wight are licenced to carry out weddings and it is expected this number will rise in the coming months as premises seek to take advantage of the new law.

"I think we will be among those authorities making the very most of the law change," said Mr Mathews, who pointed out that those couples who are planning ceremonies will also have more flexibility than ever before in terms of choosing a time for the service.

Many people complained about a previous decision by the Isle of Wight Council to move its registrar office from Northwood House to its premises in Seaclose Park.

Earlier in the year, supermodel Kate Moss renewed her wedding vows with rock star husband Jamie Hince at the Isle of Wight Festival, a year after the pair first walked down the aisle.
