Isle of Wight farmer wins award

An Isle of Wight farmer has won an award for his work with wildlife on the island.

Michael Poland, of Wroxall Cross Farm, Ventnor, was given the commendation from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) after conservation work conducted at the site.

According to a report by the Isle of Wight County Press, Mr Poland has carried out a wide range of surveys on the bats, invertebrates, birds, red squirrels, trees and plants on the island.

Bruce Fowkes, farmland conservation advisor for the south-east branch of the RSPB, said: "Mr Poland is doing valuable work on his farm for species that are in real trouble."

He added the recently proposed reductions in the EU budget for wildlife-friendly farming are "worrying", due to the facts farmers such as Mr Poland "depend on agri-environment schemes in order to balance food production with wildlife protection".

The Isle of Wight is one of the only places in the UK where red squirrels can live in the wild.
