Isle of Wight displays model dinosaur

Isle of Wight holidays could be set for a boost in popularity after a dinosaur model went on display on the island.

Dinosaur Isle has the Tyrannosaurus Rex relation model - which is one metre high - and is sure to attract lots of people to the location.

It is based on the Eotyrannus that was found by Isle of Wight-based amateur collector Gavin Leng in 1997 in the southern area of the island.

Isle of Wight-based dinosaur expert Steve Hutt carried out research on the dinosaur with help from Portsmouth University and discovered it is a new species related to the Tyrannosaurus Rex.

A spokesman for Dinosaur Isle stated the scene the model has been placed in shows how the animals would have lived on the island centuries ago.

"Eotyrannus has approached a watering hole and has surprised a group of young dinosaurs known as Hypsilophodon," they said, adding: "Within the scene there are 13 different species of animals known from the Isle of Wight fossil record."

These include fish, ants, beetles, frogs, a salamander, lizards, spiders and dragonfly, it was revealed by the spokesman for the venue.

Peter Pusey, Dinosaur Isle's general manager, added the model was made by Andrew Cox from Paleo Art and it is a complementary addition to the fossils that are already on display at the site.

"Dinosaur Isle is not just about displaying fossils, it is also about educating and showing what dinosaurs looked like hundreds of millions of years ago," he said, adding people such as Mr Leng are the lifeblood of a place such as Dinosaur Isle.

The venue is already one of the most popular places for people on Isle of Wight holidays to go to during their time on the island and it displays over 1,000 fossils.
