Isle of Wight cycle track opens

Tourists on Isle of Wight holidays who take their bicycles with them to the island can use a cycle track that has been upgraded during their break.

The Isle of Wight Council announced that the link across Newport has now been completed and is already being used by cyclists.

Individuals who want to travel on two wheels are now able to do so between Blackhouse Quay and Shide, with the latest stage in the project providing the final piece in the route between Cowes and Sandown.

David Pugh, leader of the Isle of Wight Council, explained the local authority is keen to promote cycling as an alternative transport method, especially as it can enable people to keep fit while getting to their target destination.

A £100,000 grant from UK charity Sustrans made the scheme possible, with this amount matched by funding secured by the council through developer contributions.

"I used the new cross Newport cycle track for the first time this morning on my way to work and was impressed at how quick and hassle-free it was," Mr Pugh said, adding there is now a "safe and dedicated" route from Cowes to Sandown for those on two wheels.

Simon Pratt, Sustrans regional director for the south-east of England, noted the company was delighted to be able to help the project with the injection of funding, with the track officially opened yesterday (March 5th) by Tim Thorne from CycleWight, as well as Mr Pratt and Mr Pugh.

Cycling is a popular activity for those on Isle of Wight holidays, with the island hosting a dedicated festival to the sport every year.

The next event is set to get underway on the Isle of Wight on September 22nd and will run until the 30th of the month, with hundreds of people likely to travel to the island for it.
