Isle of Wight church restored to former glory

The treasurer of a church in the Isle of Wight has hailed efforts to update it for the 21st century.

Christ Church in Sandown is a Grade II listed building but has fallen into disrepair in the last few years.

However, the place of worship was able to gain funding from organisations such as English Heritage.

Robert Files, the treasurer at Christ Church, said the subsequent repair work has helped to breathe new life into the structure.

"Christ Church now feels like a building with a future as well as a past," he told the Isle of Wight County Press.

The building had been plagued with damp and leaks, so extensive repairs and refurbishments were carried out.

Mr Files added that the restoration work is still ongoing, as new seating and lighting is being fitted, along with a brand new kitchen.

Christ Church was built in 1845 and was the first parish church to be created in the Sandown area.
