Isle of Wight artwork to change with seasons

Tourists on Isle of Wight holidays will be able to check out some new artwork after the local council announced it is to switch public pieces as the seasons change.

According to a statement from the Isle of Wight Council, the artwork in the centre of Coppins Bridge roundabout in Newport is going to be swapped in the coming days in order to mark the arrival of spring on the island.

A bio-mechanical plant made by students at Clatterford Tuition Centre - which has been given the title Mimic - is to be set up at the location this month.

Juliet Lainson, art coordinator at Clatterford, said: "The sculpture is called Mimic because it mimics a real life plant. With the onset of spring, the artwork will now flower, just like a real life plant."

She explained 11 of the tuition centre's students took part in the creation of the sculpture, which can be viewed by those on Isle of Wight holidays for the next few weeks.

It is set to "flower" by March 24th, so those who visit the island this weekend are likely to be among the first to see it come to life.

Isle of Wight artist Glenn Martin worked with the students on the creation of Mimic over the course of 2011 and it was previously installed on Coppins Bridge in July last year.

The Isle of Wight Council added: "It uses a variety of recycled materials including washing machine parts and plastic tubing."

Those on Isle of Wight holidays this weekend could also take time from their break on the island to visit a photography exhibition that is taking place at Ryde Library on Saturday (March 24th), with a gallery of images captured by members of FOCUS Ryde Imaging Group on show at the location for the rest of the month.
