IOW Symphony Orchestra to get 2014 off to a great start

With Christmas just around the corner, now is a great time to look ahead to 2014 and the exciting events that will be taking place on the Isle of Wight.

One of the first big shows on the calendar is a concert by the Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra at the Medina Theatre in Newport on January 25th.

They will be performing 'Canadian Carnival Overture' by Britten; 'A Song for the Lord Mayor's Table' by Walton; 'A Shropshire Lad Rhapsody' by Butterworth; and 'Pictures at an Exhibition' by Mussorgsky/Ravel.

Tickets cost £14 for adults and £6 for children, with the event due to start at 7.15pm. To book a seat at the show, call the theatre box office on 01983 527020.

If you miss out this time around, the orchestra will be back at the Medina Theatre, where it is based, on March 22nd to perform 'Estancia: Ballet' by Ginastera; 'Cello Concerto in D' by Haydn; and 'Symphony No. 5 in D minor' by Shostakovich.

The Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1977 by Brian Northcott, the former head of music at Carisbrooke High School. Since then, the orchestra has performed more than 100 times. It is currently conducted by Jonathan Butcher - the three-time winner of the Sir Adrian Boult Conductor's Prize.

As well as hosting the Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra, the Medina Theatre puts on a wide range of events to suit visitors of all tastes. These include stand-up comedy shows, theatre productions and art events.

Tonight (December 16th), the Vectis Decorative and Fine Arts Society is hosting 'Hedonistic Paris: Life, Art and Culture in Paris During the Jazz Age 1920/30', a lecture covering art history from classical academy painting to Picasso’s arrival at the squalid Bateau Lavoir in Montmartre.

Tickets will be available on the door, so why not pop down tonight for 8pm if you're in the Newport area and fancy exploring Parisian art history?ADNFCR-3083-ID-801673135-ADNFCR
