IOW Grand National Ashey Scurry

Horse lovers, sit up and pay attention - the Isle of Wight Grand National Ashey Scurry is taking place at the end of this month (March 30th) and you wouldn't want to miss out on the island's equivalent of the Grand National, would you?

Once every two years, islanders flock to West Ashey Farm near Ryde. Surrounded by the natural beauty of this stunning place, they watch as chestnut beauties go bounding over the obstacles set in their place, each guided by a steely and determined rider.

It's a thrilling celebration of equine beauty, to be sure, and attendance by the whole family is encouraged. Even dogs are welcomed, providing they are kept on leads, and you can take them for a walk in the nearby forest should they get a bit overexcited.

Everything kicks off from 12 noon with the first event, which features riders who are under 15 years of age - two laps over a course of fences approximately two feet in height.

There are a number of other events for kids, as well as a parade of Isle of Wight Foxhounds at around 1pm, which is non-competitive but well worth seeing at just £10 for an entry ticket.

However, it's the Isle of Wight Grand National Ashey Scurry that everyone's here to see - the main race is scheduled for a flying start at 2:40pm although you'd be well advised to find an ideal place to watch well before this time.

Riders aged 16 and over take to the course, performing two laps of the official track for the chance of placing that prestigious Blackgang Chine Cup on their mantelpiece at home.

The location is accessible by car or the Isle of Wight Steam Railway if you fancy making a day of it - there will be a special service on March 30th.

Before you think about that, though, make sure you've booked your ferry ticket.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801703636-ADNFCR
