Hundreds of jobs to be created on Isle of Wight

Hundreds of jobs may be set to be created on the Isle of Wight as a result of a move to develop an empty site on the island.

BAE Systems has unveiled its plans for Plessey Radar's Cowes land, which takes up a 53-acre plot, with a supermarket in the running to purchase part of the area.

According to a report by the Isle of Wight County Press, a 13-acre field in Cowes is being sold by the company to the supermarket chain Aldi, which would account for dozens of the new jobs.

Redundant office and industrial buildings are also set to be rented out to tenants under the plans that have been unveiled for the site.

Cowes site commercial head Tim Blake explained 350 people used to work in the properties that are up for grabs as a result of the decision, adding: "Those buildings - which were constructed in the 1980s - and a collection of older units, which could be suitable for garage or industrial use closer to the road, will be marketed by the company's estates department later in the year."

He noted this has been a successfully employed tactic by the company at many other sites up and down the country over the course of the last couple of years.

BAE is planning to spend £2.8 million to demolish some of the buildings on the Isle of Wight, while some of this cash is earmarked for improvements to be made to the remaining sites.

Project manager Nigel Pierce said the scheme should be completed by the end of the year, adding: "The improvement in buildings and ICT and multi-tenant use of the site forms part of a ten-year business plan."

BAE Systems has operations in a wide range of industries, including defence, security, IT systems, intelligence and military services.
