Hundreds enjoy Isle of Wight's cycling facilities on weekend trip

The Isle of Wight was the centre of the cycling world over the weekend as approximately 650 keen bikers gathered in the region to enjoy a special ride.

As part of the island's Cycling Festival, the huge number of cyclists convened and chose either a 50-mile or 70-mile route to complete, reports the Isle of Wight County Press. The success of the event may prove to be a useful illustration for people across the country who are thinking of booking an Isle of Wight holiday in order to enjoy a spot of cycling.

Following such a successful ride, there can be little doubt that the island has what it takes to host adventurous riders who want to experience mile after mile of stunning countryside on their next jaunt.

Many of the people who took part in the weekend extravaganza wore fake sideburns as a tribute to Bradley Wiggins, who enjoyed a hugely successful summer by winning the Tour de France and later securing a gold medal at the Olympic Games in London.

Neil Jarrett, fundraising manager at the British Heart Foundation, for whom the ride was held in aid of, said: "It went fantastically well. We were lucky with the weather and the event was well supported by cyclists."

The field was made up of a mix of both native islanders and visitors from other parts of the UK, who headed to the Isle of Wight with their two-wheeled transport. While there may well be a few aches and pains in the aftermath of the ride, the overwhelming feeling should be one of satisfaction that a route in one of the country's top cycling destinations has been conquered.

And in the process, participants may just have persuaded the next wave of Isle of Wight tourists to book their trip to the landmass off the Hampshire coast for their very own cycling celebration.
