Hear tales of trains and politics from Michael Portillo

Political heavyweight turned globe-trotter Michael Portillo is to take to the stage of the Shanklin Theatre on the Isle of Wight this December.

The politician, who served as an MP for 13 years before being dramatically defeated in the 1997 elections, is well-known as a thoughtful and witty speaker, with many tales to tell.

As well a enjoying a prominent time in Westminster, including stints in government and an ill-fated fight for the leadership of the Conservative Party, Portillo is well-respected as a social commentator, thanks in no small part to his frequent media appearances.

However, the Shanklin Theatre show will not solely consist of political anecdotes and musings on modern society, with the audience also likely to be treated to the speaker's stories from his travels.

In particular, through his hit BBC Show 'Great Railway Journeys', the former Defence Secretary has gained a comprehensive knowledge of foreign travel and European history, including that of the Isle of Wight and how it has connected with the UK mainland over the years.

'An Audience with Michael Portillo' will be staged for one night only, on the evening of Thursday  December 3rd, with tickets likely to sell out well in advance.

The politician will not be the only big name entertaining Isle of Wight audiences with stories from past and present over the festive season.

Also due to take to the stage of the historic Shanklin Theatre over the next few weeks are Reginald D Hunter, a comedian who has firmly established himself as a top star on the UK stand-up circuit, and Alan Davis, another comedian now perhaps better known for his residency on light-hearted panel show 'QI'.

Away from the talks and stand-up, a host of musical plays will be performed across the Isle of Wight between now and the new year, with highlights set to include a production of the classic satire 'London Assurance' at the Apollo Theatre in Newport.
