Government minister visits Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight has been playing host to a very special guest today (September 26th).

Government minister Eric Pickles has been on the island as part of his role as communities and local government secretary of state in the coalition.

According to a report by the Isle of Wight County Press, Mr Pickles met some of the Isle of Wight's top business leaders during his time on the island.

He was set to meet senior figures from the Isle of Wight Council including chief executive Steve Beynon as part of his trip to the island today.

The Conservative MP was also introduced to members of the Isle of Wight Community Bus Partnership as part of the official government visit to the island.

Later in the day, he was expected to go to Cowes Enterprise College to meet students and staff at the educational establishment.

Mr Pickles is the latest dignitary to have been travelling to the Isle of Wight this summer, after the Queen was accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh as part of their full UK tour that was scheduled in order to mark the Diamond Jubilee.

Thousands of locals and tourists on Isle of Wight holidays turned out to see the monarch and her husband perform a range of duties in Cowes on the island this summer.

Prince Philip returned to the Isle of Wight just a few weeks after completing his duties with the Queen as part of the beginning of the Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week regatta.

During his time on the island, the Duke of Edinburgh paid a visit to the County Club in St James' Square, as well as took a tour of AJ Wells and Sons' factory and studio on the outskirts of the town of Cowes.

He had lunch with members of the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce, Tourism and Industry at the County Club and was also given the chance to view the chamber's mobile health unit which will be parked in St James' Square.
