Explore Bembridge Fort and Culver Down

The autumn is the best time to visit the Isle of Wight, as the weather is often perfect for long walks and marvelling at breathtaking coastal views.

Because the island is home to so many magnificent old buildings and historic sites, it can be tricky settling on a route for your daily stroll.

If you're planning a trip for the end of October, then why not put a note in your diary to attend the National Trust-led walk along Culver Down and around Bembridge Fort?

The ramble will allow you to explore local history and culture, with the starting point the once-derelict Victorian fort that sits on top of Bembridge Down, north-east of Sandown.

It was originally built in the 1860s to protect the island from the threat of a French invasion, and is surrounded by a dry ditch.

Recently restored, the monument offers awe-inspiring 360-degree views of Culver Down and ample photo opportunities.

What's more, you'll benefit from being taken around by a National Trust guide who will be able to answer all your pressing questions about the fort and provide you with some interesting facts.

This is just the start of the tour however, as you'll then have the chance to experience Culver Down, a prime nesting place for all kinds of seabirds and home to dozens of different plant species.

Stout footwear is recommended for this amble, as there are some challenging slopes to overcome and you don't want to risk ruining your best pair of trainers.

What's more, dogs are welcome to join so if you've brought your pooch over to the island with you feel free to bring them along, but only if they are on a lead.

The walk is taking place on October 25th and will last approximately three hours, from 10am to 1pm. This means that you can follow up the experience by revisiting any parts on the journey you particularly enjoyed or exploring the nearby village of Bembridge, where there are a number of shops, cafes and restaurants.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801646589-ADNFCR
