Explore a new side to the Romans this spring on the IOW

Visitors travelling to the Isle of Wight by ferry this spring have the chance to see a different side to the Romans that they might not have been aware of thanks to a new exhibition at Brading Roman Villa.

'Roman Sexuality: Images, Myths and Meanings', which is on tour from the British Museum in London, features more than 50 artefacts, including the world famous Warren Cup, as featured on the BBC's 'History of the World in 100 Objects' programme.

The silver cup, which was found near Jerusalem and dates from between 15BC and AD15, depicts two raised scenes involving gay men, which were created by hammering out the metal from inside the vessel.

Its importance was explained in the BBC programme: 'Silver cups of this date are now exceptionally rare, as so many were melted down, and among the survivors, few in the world can match the virtuoso skill of the Warren Cup.

'It's not just a superb piece of Roman Imperial metalwork - this object reminds us that the way societies view sexual relationships is never fixed.'

This is a particularly important message given the recent debate surrounding gay marriage in the UK.

If you'd like to see the Warren Cup and the other outstanding finds for yourself, the exhibition opens on February 14th and runs until May 4th, with entry between 10am and 4pm.

Of course, the villa, which is set among beautiful rolling fields, has more to offer than just this exhibition, with the Visitor Centre and Museum open daily from 9.30am to 5pm.

Entry to the villa costs £6.50 for adults, £5.75 for seniors, £5.75 for students, £3.75 for children aged between five and 16, and family tickets are priced at £20 for two adults and up to three children. Please note that visiting the Roman exhibition will incur an additional charge.

Other events taking place at Brading this spring include screenings of hit films such as 'Le Weekend' starring Jim Broadbent, with tickets for these priced at £5. ADNFCR-3083-ID-801693526-ADNFCR
