Enjoy the colours of spring at Robin Hill

With the weather improving day by day, the first buds of spring are now coming into full bloom. It's a wonderful time of year to be outdoors, with a freshness in the air, wildlife all around and beautiful colours dappled across the countryside.

On the Isle of Wight, there's no better place to be to enjoy the different shades of spring than Robin Hill's Woodland Gardens. There you'll find planted clearings, specimen trees, streams, ponds and sculptures set among eight acres of historic woodland.

Spring and autumn are the most colourful times to visit, and in April the gardens come alive with the blues and pinks of bluebells and rhododendrons.

As well as these seasonal flowers, more permanent attractions include the Driftwood Dome, featuring natural sculptures; the greenhouse, where you can warm up on colder days; the ponds with their Chinese-style bridges and tumbling waterfalls; the live wildlife cameras at the Treehouse Woodland Centre; the Butterfly Garden, home to more than 20 species; and Robin Hill's record-breaking 57ft high tree sculpture.

The sculpture, the tallest of its kind in the world, was created in 2009 by nationally-renowned chainsaw artist Paul Sivell using a dead sweet chestnut tree that was due to be felled. While taller examples exist, these were all carved with the tree lying down, but Sivell chainsawed and chiselled out his designs portraying local history while the tree was standing upright - a daunting challenge.

As for the animal cameras, wildlife lovers will hope to catch a glimpse of a rare red squirrel - our native brush-tailed friends that were overrun by North American greys.

If you'd like to see all this and more, tickets for the Robin Hill Adventure Park and Gardens cost from £12.50 for adults, £10.50 for OAPs and the disabled, and £45 for groups of four. Under-fours go free. The park opens daily from 10am, but closing times vary throughout the year.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801708803-ADNFCR
