Donations required to save Isle of Wight birds

The RSPB is calling for the general public, including those who have taken Isle of Wight holidays, to donate money to their attempts to save the island's endangered birdlife.

Skylarks, the yellow wagtail and the lapwing are among the species to be listed in the organisation's top 100 birds at risk.

While the RSPB has already promised to immediately put its resources towards protecting 40 of the endangered animals, it is calling on the government and the general public to help fund projects to protect the others, reports the Isle of Wight County Press.

"At the RSPB's Brading Marshes reserve yellow wagtails can be seen on grassland around the feet of cattle and there are wading redshank on the marshes," it noted.

Tourists heading on Isle of Wight holidays who are keen to spot birds may be able to catch a glimpse of little egrets and common darter dragonflies if they head to Brading Marshes as autumn is the best time to see the species close up.
