Discover the secret life of bats

Visitors to the Parkhurst Forest on the Isle of Wight are often completely unaware of the least-known forest residents roosting high above their heads or in a dark burrow somewhere.

Th repe elusive bats that call the woodland their home begin to stir at sunset, just as the last tourists are leaving the area, for an evening of flitting and flying over the treetops and between the branches.

Their shy nature is what prompted the Parkhurst Forest Bat Project to begin establishing exactly how many species were present and how they use the habitats provided so generously by the natural assets around them.

This January, visitors to the Isle of Wight can hear of their discoveries at a special talk entitled The Secret Life of Bats, taking place at the Newport venue Quay Arts.

The lecture, which is free to attend, will highlight the physical and echolocation call intricacies that are so essential to the bats for their day to day survival in the woodland.

Also up for discussion are the methods employed by the Parkhurst Forest Bat Project to find out more about the species present, with the society's notable use of echolocation call signature, signal processing and cartographic methods to be explained.

Revolutionary sound ecological practices designed to locate different bats and derive habitat models will be featured as well.

Although the talk is delivered free of charge, visitors will need to register online to attend this fascinating insight into bat behaviour, which takes place on February 26th at 7pm.

Parkhurst Forest is located to the north-west of Newport and is open to those hoping to sample some bat behaviour first hand. It is also home to a number of other interesting species including the garden warbler, the long eared owl and the red squirrel, so is well worth a visit for wildlife fanatics.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801683129-ADNFCR
