Dinosaur fans encouraged to head to Isle of Wight

People who are interested in palaeontology have been advised to book a ferry to the Isle of Wight.

According to the Guardian, the island is one of the best places in which to try to find a dinosaur fossil.

Indeed, it noted that thousands of iguanodon bones have been found on the Isle of Wight, along with relics of several other species.

The Wealden outcrop in Sandown was highlighted as one good location where the chances of stumbling across a fossil are quite high.

"It's hard to picture this sleepy little island overrun with dinos, but more than 15 types once called this place home," the Guardian commented.

The newspaper added that dinosaur bones keep turning up because the Isle of Wight offers the "perfect mix" of location and geology.

This comes after the Isle of Wight Council noted that the island has one of the highest concentrations of dinosaur fossils in the world.

Adults and children were recently encouraged by the authority to sign up to the fossil walk, which has been organised by Dinosaur Isle and gets underway at Shanklin seafront on May 31st 2010.
