Darts legends heading to Isle of Wight for festive tournament

Some of the world's top darts players are set to sail over to the Isle of Wight in December for a special festive tournament.

Already being dubbed the biggest darts event ever to be held on the island, the IW Christmas Classic knockout tournament will take place at the Lower Hyde Holiday Park, just outside Shanklin, on Friday December 6th.

Among the big names already confirmed for the event are the former world champion and long-time fans' favourite Raymond Van Barneveld and current world number two Michael Van Gerwen, as well as a number of other top professionals, including James Wade and Co Stompe.

Van Barneveld - or Barney as he is known among followers of the sport - will go into the event as the firm favourite, having been on a fine run of form over recent months, though a few surprises and shock results are more than likely.

Joining the world-famous stars on the oche will be the Isle of Wight's very own darts maestro Keegan Brown, who recently did his reputation no harm by beating the most accomplished darts player of all time, Phil 'The Power' Taylor.

Additionally, local amateurs are to be given the chance to join the professionals, with a series of preliminary tournaments set to find three from the island's pubs and clubs to play in the event.

Tickets for the Christmas Classic are already on sale and, given the stellar line-up, are likely to sell out well in advance.

Although the tournament is certainly one of the island's winter sporting highlights, darts is far from the most popular sport on the island, which is best known for being one of the world's top destinations for sailing.

Windsurfing, sea kayaking and hiking enthusiasts also take the ferry across from the mainland in their thousands in order to push themselves to the limit while enjoying some spectacular coastal scenery.

Additionally, away from traditional sports, the island is fast-emerging as a hotspot for high-adrenaline activities including paragliding, surfing and mountain biking, while the official tourist board also advises giving fishing and golf a go as part of an activity-led holiday. ADNFCR-3083-ID-801658855-ADNFCR
