Creation of Isle of Wight footpath 'is a challenge'

The creation of a footpath around the coast of the Isle of Wight has been described as a "challenge" by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust.

Natural England is currently working on plans to develop a coastal footpath around the Isle of Wight and the Hampshire coast.

The trust has welcomed the proposals, but expressed concerns about potentially damaging the wildlife that lives in the affected areas.

Natural England has already stated that it recognises that the Coastal Access Scheme will require sensitive handling.

Debbie Tann, chief executive of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, said the impact on local wildlife could be "significant", especially on coastal birds.

She said: "Whilst the trust welcomes initiatives that promote responsible access to the countryside, we are concerned that the act could potentially damage the very thing that it wants people to enjoy."

Visitors to the island in the next two weeks can enjoy the Isle of Wight Walking Festival, which is ongoing until May 23rd 2010 and features numerous coastal walks. ADNFCR-3083-ID-19775291-ADNFCR
