Bach performance to take place this weekend

Fans of classical music planning an Isle of Wight getaway this weekend might like to head along to the St John the Baptist Church in Ryde, where Philip Fryer's Ryde Chorus will be showcasing their interpretation of Bach's acclaimed St John Passion.

The Isle of Wight County Press reports the orchestra are to be joined by internationally-acclaimed soloist Sandie Hunt, while a number of other solos will be undertaken by tenor Rogers Covey-Crump, soprano Olwen Keates, tenor Samir Savant and bass Richard Lea.

Composed for the Good Friday Vespers service of the St Nicholas Church in Leipzig in 1724 by Bach, the piece is a dramatic representation of The Passion as told in the gospel of John. It is described as having an extravagance and expressive immediacy, while a number of reflective arias, chorales and ariosos framed by an opening and closing chorus.

This is all set to an ensemble of a four-part choir, strings, basso continuo and a pair of flauti traversi and oboes. Bach also utilised flute and viola for special segments of the piece. It is the oldest of Bach's Passions, followed by the St Matthew Passion and St Mark Passion.

As a result, it promises to be a wonderful night of entertainment for fans of culture and classical music, with the show to get underway from 19:30 BST.

Tickets for the event will cost £10 and guests are advised that the doors open from 19:00.

The news follows the recent performance of Elgar's Sea Pictures, as well as a number of works by Dvorak and Vaughan-Williams' Pastoral Symphony, by the IW Symphony Orchestra last month.

It included a solo performance by the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London's graduate Megan Quick and was one of the stand-out classical performances on the island of recent months. ADNFCR-3083-ID-801578764-ADNFCR
