Animals on the Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight is home to a veritable ecosystem of great British animals. With the UK currently playing host to the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, why not seize the chance to see some actual factual British creatures up close and personal during your time on the island? Read on to find out about some of the specimens you might find yourself nose to nose with.

Badgers

Badger watching is an immensely popular activity throughout the UK, with these distinctive black and white creatures snouting their way into the hearts of everyone. If you're visiting the island and want to catch a glimpse of one of these charismatic animals snuffling around, the Old Park Hotel in Ventnor has a long-held tradition of putting food out for them in the evenings.

Red squirrels

Although these lovely animals are all but extinct in England, there is a thriving population of around 3,500 living on the Isle of Wight. Their delightful little ear tufts make for the most adorable photographs. See if you can spot one by wandering in the wooded areas of the island - Borthwood Copse is one of the best places, as is the Mottistone Estate in Parkhurst Forest.

Foxes

Another one of Britain's best four-legged inhabitants is the fox. Demonised by the press, they're actually wonderful to watch in the wild. Swanpond Copse is a great place to watch them, as is Arreton Down. Both natural reserves are run by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and they do their best to protect the wildlife.

Amazon World

If you're seeking something a bit more exotic, Amazon World Zoo located near Arreton features a host of furry friends you won't ordinarily find in the UK. It's a charming place and excellent for the children - you'll meet big cats, reptiles and all manner of fascinating insects and spiders.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801685159-ADNFCR
