Walk the Wight attended by 10,000

Some 10,000 people have taken part in the Walk the Wight challenge that has been held as part of the 2011 Isle of Wight Walking Festival.

According to a report in the Isle of Wight County Press, the majority of the entrants took part in the full cross-island trek from Bembridge to Carisbrooke.

It added that schoolchildren joining the event walked along their own trail from the cycle track between Newport and Sandown to the finish line at Alum Bay.

The Earl Mountbatten Hospice is the chosen charity for the funds raised by those taking part in the Walk the Wight challenge - with entrants bathed in sunshine during the day's trek.

Ramblers will continue to trek around the island as part of the Isle of Wight Walking Festival for the rest of the week, with events still to come including the Beachers, Bars and Blisters three-day challenge, which sees individuals walk around the whole coast of the island.
