Isle of Wight walking event this weekend

Isle of Wight holidays are expected to be popular among rambling enthusiasts this weekend, as the island is gearing up to host the Autumn Walking Weekend.

The event is one of the most popular festivals on the island's calendar and it is set to get underway on Friday (October 26th), with walks scheduled until the 29th of the month.

Organised by the Isle of Wight Council, the event is designed to promote the island and its comprehensive network of footpaths.

Councillor George Brown, cabinet member responsible for tourism at the local authority, said: "Because of its varied geography and its comprehensive footpath network, the island continues to be an extremely popular destination for walkers."

He added that the Isle of Wight Council is "delighted" to be able to play a part in the hosting of the event, due to the fact that it "provides both an excellent showcase for the island and a high quality event at what is the low tourism season".

Families with children are among those who could be taking Isle of Wight holidays to coincide with the Autumn Walking Weekend and parents were informed there are a wide range of activities scheduled for the four-day event that will appeal to their little ones.

"Join in our giant toddle walk, or encounter fields forest and graveyards with the Hallowe'en walk, or have a giggle and join in the singing walk, and bring along your own instruments, and you can even request your own songs," said a statement from the local authority.

Singletons can even take part in the famous speed dating walk that is a popular fixture as part of the Isle of Wight's Autumn Walking Weekend.

Many couples have met their partners at the event on the island in past years and participants will be looking out for love when the walk takes place in the coming days.

Indeed, the speed dating walk has been responsible for four weddings, with the latest couple June and Mike Edwards marrying at St James Church in Ryde in May.
