Isle of Wight secret bunker to be included in walking festival

A tour of a secret nuclear bunker on the Isle of Wight is to be included as part of this year's annual walking festival.

Richard Downing contacted the Isle of Wight County Press after the newspaper reported on the secrets of the bunker, which was built during the Second World War.

Ventnor Downs: Prehistory to Cold War will be a 5.5-mile, five-hour stroll starting at the Smugglers Haven car park, taking in sights such as RAF Ventnor, as well as the St Boniface bunker.

Donations to Ventnor and District Local History Society will be accepted by those who attend the event, which is being held on May 14th 2011.

The former resident engineer of the bunker site Jack Williamson explained that the facility was one of 40 created all over the UK.

He told the news provider: "The object was to move the radar equipment underground from the old wartime installations and to replace the old aerials on high towers with ground-level aerials."
