Celebrity to launch Isle of Wight Walking Festival with daredevil feat

This year's Isle of Wight (IW) Walking Festival will kick off with a daring feat by Mark King of 80s band Level 42.

On May 5th in Newport's St Thomas's Square, the celebrity singer will walk across burning embers to raise money for local charity Beaulieu House - a centre for children with severe disabilities.

What's more, King will not be the only firewalker in attendance, as the IW Walking Festival has invited brave members of the public to apply to take a course which will teach them to get across the heated wood and even an area of broken glass.

Those who want to cross the burning embers must be able to offer sponsorship money of at least £100, £50 of which will pay for the daring task.

People who agree to take part in the stunt will cross 20 feet of material heated to 1,236 degrees Fahrenheit after going through a seminar called Learn or Burn, which will help them increase their confidence and self-esteem and let go of their fears.

The glasswalk will involve 20 feet of broken shards from 2,000 wine bottles.
Mr King, who lives on the Isle of Wight, is excited about the event, remarking: "I am thrilled to have been asked to officially launch the 2012 IW Walking Festival and what an evening of fun-filled terror awaits."

Elaine Cesar, organiser of the festival, which is the largest of its kind in the UK and is now in its 14th year, said it is "pleasing" that the celebrity singer has agreed to get involved with the event.

She joked: "Perhaps we should get all his relatives there as well, so when he crosses the hot embers he will be 'Running in the Family'."

The IW Walking Festival includes more than 250 walks and suitable activities for people of all ages and abilites.

It runs from May 5th to 20th and is followed by the Autumn Walking Weekend, which will be held between October 26th and 29th.
