Walk off Christmas dinner with a Boxing Day ramble

Even though we celebrate Christmas every year, it's amazing how we somehow manage to overeat every single time - stuffing ourselves full with roast potatoes, Christmas pudding and chocolates.

However, this year, rather than spending Boxing Day vegetating on the sofa how about instead walking off the Christmas excess on the scenic Isle of Wight?

This coming December 26th as part of the Ramblers Festival of Winter Walks the local Isle of Wight walking association has organised a Boxing Day morning stroll starting at 9.30am in St Helens, near Ryde.

From the car park, Vernon Gibbs will lead participants on a seven-mile jaunt, arriving back in the village in time for a well-deserved Boxing Day lunch.

No matter what time of year you visit, the Isle of Wight Ramblers association will be leading walks all across the island, including a number this coming December.

On December 7th at 9am, Mr Gibbs will be setting off with his group from Godshill car park on a 13-mile excursion. Although it's quite a long walk, the promised fish and chip lunch should be enough motivation to keep you going.

The following weekend on December 14th, Mike Marchant will be leading a 15-mile nature hike up hills and though valleys. A picnic lunch will provide sustenance and energy to those who take part.

If Christmas is an excuse for excess, New Year is no different, so shake off those New Year's Eve hangovers with Tim and Jackie's short 5-mile New Year's Day ramble from Newchurch village car park via Wacklands to Windford for refreshments. You'll make your return through Borthwood.

The association's website is also a fabulous resource for planning your own trips to the island - listing walker-friendly pubs, links to download walks and all the upcoming events.

Joining the Ramblers costs £32 a year and includes a quarterly magazine and a handbook. You can also join for a month for £3. ADNFCR-3083-ID-801664209-ADNFCR
