Visit Quay Arts for culture

Anyone planning a cultural getaway on the Isle of Wight this year would be well advised to head to Newport's Quay Arts, where a wide array of enlightening and intellectual events are held each month.

Refurbished in 1997 and set in the picturesque surroundings of a converted 19th Century brewery warehouse complex at the head of the River Medina, Quay Arts is supported by The Arts Council of England and the Isle of Wight Council in delivering some of the most thought-provoking and entertaining shows on the island.

Offering three gallery spaces, a cafe regularly showcasing musical and performing arts talent, a 134-person capacity theatre and popular cafe/bar serving delicious home-cooked meals on a daily basis, the facility is right at the heart of cultural exploration on the Isle of Wight.

Furthermore, regular workshops are held at the centre encouraging visitors of all ages to get involved with projects and to explore their own interests and cultural identity.

Upcoming events that are set to capture the imagination of visitors to Quay Arts in the coming weeks include a work by award-winning artist Jackie Oates.

Her Lullabies project examines the influence of the folk music scene on lullabies across the ages and explores the impact that these tunes have on not only children, but adults too.

Ms Oates explained: "For a long time I've been fascinated with lullabies, often being struck by the way that, for adults, hearing them can bring back strong memories and feelings of being a child again."

Meanwhile, another attraction that could have visitors flocking to the centre is the Art of Invention exhibition, which running from April 27th to July 4th.

The show focuses on famous seismologist and inventor John Milne, who lived on the island for more than 20 years. It celebrates the 100th anniversary of his passing and will feature an array of the machinery and works he created to help in the measurement of earthquakes and other seismological activity.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801563623-ADNFCR
