UK tourism tipped to see another successful year

An Isle of Wight-based holiday rental company is confident the British tourism industry will perform strongly this year.

According to Wight Locations, many people in the UK decided to holiday at home in 2009 because of the "rocketing" euro and the economic downturn, Travelmole reports.

Mark Curtis, managing director of the company, said people's desire to get value for money from their holidays led to the camping and self-catering sectors doing particularly well.

Despite the fact that the UK has now emerged from recession - economic output rose by 0.3 per cent in the last quarter of 2009 - the country's tourism sector is still reaping the benefits.

"I'm encouraged we are now seeing this momentum continue," Mr Curtis commented.

"If things keep going the way they are, bookings in 2010 will be another record."

However, Mr Curtis stated that many European destinations such as Spain have stepped up their marketing efforts in order to attract more visitors.

This, he said, means places like the Isle of Wight will need to be at the top of their game to fend off this competition.
