Shorter Isle of Wight holidays could become more popular

Tourists may be taking shorter Isle of Wight holidays than previously due to their economic situation.

Sean Tipton, spokesman for ABTA - The Travel Association, stated that the organisation has noticed more people taking ten-day breaks rather than going away for 14 nights.

He explained that this is because the recession, followed by the subsequent slow recovery, means people have less cash to spend.

But he pointed out that those thinking of an Isle of Wight holiday should go now, because prices will increase the closer to Christmas it gets.

"People have been reluctant to give up on their holidays but certainly have been going for shorter periods of time," he said.

Mr Tipton added that once the economy recovers fully, people will go back to taking longer breaks.

He was commenting after a survey by lastminute.com found that half of all Britons failed to take their full holiday allocation during 2009, with 45 per cent still with days to take off before the end of this year.
