Return to the age of steam on the Isle of Wight

One of the Isle of Wight's top visitor attractions is undoubtedly the award-winning Isle of Wight Steam Railway, where you can turn back the hands of time and step into a different era entirely: the age of steam!

Here, at the steam museum, you'll have an opportunity to witness the sight of these powerful steam engines, which once formed the backbone of communication with the outside world. The Isle of Wight may be small, but there was a time when it had a thriving railway, with more than 50 miles of track.

Today, cars may be the preferred form of transportation for most, but the Isle of Wight Steam Railway is a chance to return to this beautifully preserved past – with over five and a half miles of track between Wooton and Smallbrook Junction painstakingly restored so that you can enjoy a ride on a real-life steam train.

Considered one of Britain's top heritage railways, this charming rural station has everything you think of when you cast your mind's eye back – chugging steam engines, exquisite carriages and uniformed ticket inspectors.

There are also plenty of daily and activities and special events if you're here for a day out, where your young ones will not only have plenty of fun but also learn a thing or two about how the world used to be. The highlight is definitely the chance to ride on these carriages - which were once used in the Victorian and Edwardian times – as they roll through the island's unspoiled countryside.

On November 9th, there's the launch of a special event, with a whole weekend of special train rides to mark the 50th anniversary of the closure of the Hayling Island branch.

You'll be able to ride on the island's terrier loco, with trains sporting special liveries and an exhibition recalling the golden age of the South Coast branchline, which operated across the island, as well as guided workshop tours and the new 'Changing Trains' exhibition.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801656023-ADNFCR
