Plans change for Isle of Wight hotel

A revised planning application has been submitted for a new hotel on the Isle of Wight.

Proposals have been made to the Isle of Wight for changes to be made to the blueprint for the multi-million pound development at the Ventnor Winter Gardens site.

According to a report by the Isle of Wight County Press, the number of bedrooms at the new hotel is being cut to 32 under the updated plans, but each room will be larger as a result.

The development is being led by Michelin-starred chef Robert Thompson of the Hambrough Hotel, with the plans for the site including a 60-cover restaurant.

Some £4 million is being spent on the renovation of the Ventnor Winter Gardens site, which was previously among the top attractions for individuals on Isle of Wight holidays.

"The plans are going out to tender and we hope to get started and on site building before the end of the year," said Mr Thompson, who added it is hoped the hotel and restaurant could be taking bookings by Easter 2014 if everything goes as proposed.

"There is great interest from the construction industry and some very exciting times ahead. We are aware of people’s concerns and are eager to get started too," he noted.

Ventnor Winter Gardens was closed down due to the fact that the Isle of Wight Council decided it could no longer afford to pay the running costs of the location due to government cuts.

Repair work needed at the site was estimated to be set to cost £650,000 and the local authority sold the venue to a group led by Mr Thompson for just £1.

Mr Thompson began his career at the hallowed Winteringham Fields 11 years ago and just a couple of years into his role there he was appointed the head chef.

In recent years, he has been running the Hambrough on the Isle of Wight, which is known as one of the top fine dining locations on the island.
