New season of Isle of Wight jazz announced

Once again, the Isle of Wight will be alive with the sound of music over the New Year as the 2014 season of Jazz at the Apollo gets off to an exciting start.
While the island may well be better known as a hotbed of folk music, in addition to boasting a vibrant comedy circuit, thanks to the regular concerts and informal performances held at the Apollo Theatre, the jazz scene has been going from strength to strength.
And 2014 looks set to be the best year yet for holidaying jazz aficionados, with a host of acclaimed artists lined up to play the historic venue.
As always, the theatre will be given over to jazz on the third Sunday of each month, with tickets available from two weeks in advance and costing just £10 for adults and £5 for concessions, including students.
Among the acts already confirmed for the new season are the John Martin Trio, who will be performing a tribute to the 'Great Jazz Pianists' past and present in the middle of February, while vocalist Louise Parker will be joined by her three-piece backing band for a March showcase.
All of this will lead up to the famous Newport Jazz Weekend, due to take place over the summer, though exact dates and the likely line-up will be confirmed once 2014 is well and truly underway.
Though nothing like as big as certain rival venues on the Isle of Wight, the Apollo Theatre nevertheless holds a special place in the heart of many a culture vulture, with both locals and residents taking in regular concerts, plays and other events in the converted Methodist chapel.
Indeed, the Apollo plays an integral part in the Newport arts scene, arguably the strongest on the island.
Alongside the historic theatre, the town boasts several small galleries and Quay Arts, which attracts big-name acts, including touring comedians and musicians from around the world, and is popular among culture-loving holidaymakers staying by the sea.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801675046-ADNFCR
