Janet Street-Porter recommends Isle of Wight holidays

Isle of Wight holidays could be set to become more popular after they were recommended by one of the UK's most famous broadcasters and journalists.

Janet Street-Porter described the seaside town of Ventnor as being the UK's equivalent of Biarritz or Deauville - destinations that were "once-chic" but are now being restored to their former glory.

The former editor of the Independent on Sunday was writing in a column for the weekend magazine in the Daily Mail and described Ventnor as a "dazzling confection of white villas".

According to a report by the local news provider VentnorBlog, Street-Porter wrote: "There is plenty of Victorian architecture to admire."

The journalist is known to be a keen walker and pointed out anyone who goes on an Isle of Wight holiday can expect to get lots of exercise from going up hills during their time on the island.

She used her piece as a chance to recommend some of the top walks to enjoy.

"Go west along the seafront, past the paddling pool shaped like the Isle of Wight, and explore the lush green Undercliff," advised Street-Porter.

"Head up to the Botanic Gardens for a snack and then return via the clifftop coastal path."

She also recommended tourists on Isle of Wight holidays try out the "steep climb" to enjoy a big lunch at the Bonchurch Inn.

Those who have been inspired by the journalist to travel to the island for a break may wish to time their vacation with the upcoming Autumn Walking Weekend.

The event is set to take place from October 21st to 24th and is an offshoot of the popular Isle of Wight Walking Festival, which attracts thousands of ramblers to take Isle of Wight holidays.

Visitors can take part in treks such as the Tennyson Trail, the Brighstone Forest Safari and the three-day long beaches, bars and blisters walk.
