Isle of Wight sailing 'a once-in-a-lifetime trip'

Isle of Wight holidays could become increasingly popular among those who want to try out sailing, after the island was described as offering a "once-in-a-lifetime" experience.

Hannah Goulding, a 16-year-old from Stourbridge who is currently fighting cancer, travelled to the Isle of Wight to take part in a sailing challenge with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.

The teen, who finished her treatment for High Grade B Cell Non Hodgkins Lymphoma at Birmingham Children's Hospital last summer according to a report in the Stourbridge News, was "excited" to go on the trip when she first heard about it.

Hannah said: "I jumped at the chance and it has been a blast. On the last night we slept out on the deck, which was defineitly one of the highlights, we could watch the stars."

She added the worst bit about her sailing experience on the Isle of Wight was having to go home at the end of it.

As part of the trip to the island, Hannah and the other youngsters to have taken part in the break were invited to a dinner with Dame Ellen MacArthur herself.

Some 23 other young people who have been battling with various types of cancer went along on the challenge, which allows them to learn the basics of sailing from a range of experienced tutors.

Dame Ellen - famous for her round-the-world trip in 2005 - launched the trust a number of years ago in a bid to aid the recovery of cancer victims by offering them sailing holidays, many of which take place on and around the Isle of Wight.

She is well-known to islanders and tourists who travel there as she regularly heads to take part in the annual Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week sailing regatta, which is held every August.
