Isle of Wight named sunniest place in Britain

The Isle of Wight has been named the sunniest place in Great Britain by a new survey.

Research by Halifax found that there is an average of 37.4 hours of sunshine a week on the island, which may encourage people seeking a break in the sun to book Isle of Wight holidays.

It comes as part of a study into quality of life up and down the country, with south Cambridgeshire named as the best place to live in Britain.

The area was chosen because of the high standard of health among residents, as well as long life expectancy and good employment figures.

Nitesh Patel, housing economist at Halifax, commented: "Even the rain falls less frequently than the national average in south Cambridgeshire."

One event which is likely to be attended by those on Isle of Wight holidays this year is Cowes Week, an annual sailing regatta which attracts tens of thousands of visitors every week.

The List recently noted that 8,000 competitors and 40 races will take part in the event this August.
