Isle of Wight launches new tourism drive

The Isle of Wight Council has announced it is launching a new drive in a bid to increase the number of people who head to the island for a holiday.

Leading private sector businesses on the island are to join forces with the local authority in order to form a new not-for-profit initiative called a Destination Management Organisation.

The proposal is being floated by the Isle of Wight Council at the present time and would see 12 local companies come on board at a cost of £10,000 a year, reports the Isle of Wight County Press, which claims £3 million would be injected into the scheme over the next nine years.

It is said the council would transfer all of its assets over to the new organisation if it gets the green light to move forward with the plans in the coming months.

The local authority is hoping to have the new body in place by April next year, in order to boost the number of people booking Isle of Wight holidays to enjoy next summer.

After the consultation period is over, the Isle of Wight Council's cabinet will discuss the plans to see whether they are a viable proposition for the future of the local authority's tourism division.

Fossil hunters may be particularly interested in heading to the island for a break, due to the fact the Isle of Wight is known to be a good place to find various relics, including dinosaur bones.

A report by the Independent recommended those who visit the island go on a walk along the cliffs at Yaverland, as this is one of the best spots on the Isle of Wight to pick up fossils.

Walkers were also advised to go on Isle of Wight holidays, due to the fact the island's many footpaths are very well signposted.
