Isle of Wight hotels named among UK's best

Tourists searching for somewhere to go on a break this summer may wish to book Isle of Wight holidays after two hotels on the island were named among the best in the UK.

The Swiss Cottage in Shanklin was picked out as the 12th best UK family hotel in TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards 2012, while 16th spot went to another island location, the Wight Montrene Hotel in Sandown.

Famous destinations such as the Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire - near Hook - and the Crowne Plaza, London Kensington, were among those to have been beaten by the island accommodation in the prizegiving, reports the Isle of Wight County Press.

Swiss Cottage owner Keith Beckett stated he and his wife Christine are thrilled to have been given the accolade, adding: "We have always been one of the top hotels in Shanklin, but to be one of the best in the UK takes it a step further. We get a lot of hits from TripAdvisor, so it's good advertising for us and we hope it will have a positive impact on the business."

He pointed out it is five years since the couple took over the running of the Isle of Wight hotel and in that time they have won a Silver Award from Visit England.

Mr Beckett highlighted the fact that hospitality is one of the key selling points of the accommodation, which has just eight bedrooms.

"We really do go that extra mile to create a home away from home for our guests," he was quoted as saying by the news provider.

There is plenty of history behind the Swiss Cottage residence as it was built around 150 years ago and is ideally placed for visitors to explore the whole of the Isle of Wight.

The Wight Montrene Hotel, which is located at Avenue Road, is a much larger venue and boasts 41 bedrooms, as well as other facilities such as an indoor swimming pool, sauna and spa, along with a restaurant.

Owners John Amor and Fran Size have managed hotels all over the country and have been at the Isle of Wight site for the last six years, with Mr Amor describing the accolade as "considerable".

He pointed out the site has been picked out by the travel website as one of the top locations to stay in Sandown for the last few years, but to make it into the top 25 family hotels in the UK is another positive step for the destination.

It was noted by the hotelier that it is good news for the Isle of Wight's economy that two of its hotels are so highly rated, explaining there are a wide range of "small, coach tour bed and breakfast places" in Sandown and Shanklin that may be tempting for those considering heading to the island for a break at some point over the course of the year.

One of the top benefits to staying at the Wight Montrene Hotel is the fact it boasts one of the most secluded locations on the island, set in two acres of grounds, meaning guests are not bothered by any noise from the High Street or the Esplanade.

However, these are not the only Isle of Wight hotels to have been given a boost by the TripAdvisor website, as it recently named The Hillside in Ventnor as the second best hotel in the whole of the UK.

Hillside owner Gert Bach thanked all of those who helped the accommodation to win the accolade in TripAdvisor's tenth annual Travellers' Hotel Choice Awards and described it as a "humbling" honour to be picked out to receive the prize.
