Isle of Wight hosting family events this week

Tourists heading to the Isle of Wight over the coming week may want to head along to Newport to take part in a special event..

With many of the country's schoolchildren on half-term next week, it may be the ideal time to head to the island to experience the attractions it has to offer.

On Wednesday (October 31st), visitors will be able to take part in a Clay Day being organised by Newport Roman Villa, where families will have the chance to sculpt their own creation, which they will be allowed to take home.

Experts will be on hand to teach young and old alike how to create a clay arch or tile and the event runs from 10:30 to 15:00 GMT and carries and admission charge of £1 per person.

A trip to the villa, which was discovered in 1926 and is estimated to be 1,700 years old, will also enable families to enjoy the other attraction on offer. Sections of the villa have been reconstructed to offer a glimpse into life in Britain during the third century and visitors can take a look at a Roman kitchen and explore the remains of a bath suite that boasts underfloor heating and mosaic floors.

Furthermore, a wide array of Roman artefacts found across the Isle of Wight are on display to visitors, ranging from pottery to human remains.

A visit to the Museum of Island History is also a necessity for any visitor wanting to learn more about the origins of the Isle of Wight. Located in Newport's Guildhall, it is open all year round and uses touchscreen computers to educate visitors about the history of the island, from the time of the dinosaurs to the present day.

It also features temporary exhibitions that explore one particular part of history in greater detail, which allows the museum to showcase objects from its collections that are otherwise not in permanent display.
