Isle of Wight holidays recommended to cyclists

Isle of Wight holidays could become increasingly popular as a result of the island being named in the world's top ten destinations for cyclists to visit.

According to the Lonely Planet Guide, the Isle of Wight is comparable to locations such as the Otago Peninsula in New Zealand, the San Juan Islands in Washington in the US and the west coast in Tasmania, Australia, for bikers to head to for a break.

Isle of Wight holidays may hold an advantage over the others, due to the fact the island can be reached via a short ferry ride from the UK mainland, making it easy to take a bike along.

David Pugh, Isle of Wight Council leader, described the news as "very good" for the island, which hosts popular cycling festivals every year.

"We are blessed with stunning views and areas of outstanding natural beauty and - as a keen cyclist myself - I am not surprised the island has made it into the top ten destinations of the world," he said.

The Good Mountain Biking Guide previously described the Tennyson Trail as "possibly the best chalk trail in the UK," so this is not the first time cyclists have been pointed towards Isle of Wight holidays.

Bikers are sure to be heading to the island in the coming weeks, as the Isle of Wight Cycling Festival is set to get underway on September 17th, running until the 25th.

Tourists are encouraged to take part in events such as the Cycle the Wight and Hills Killer challenges during their time on the island.

This comes as Hollywood actress Kate Winslet - the star of movies such as Titanic and The Reader - stated in an interview with the Sun she used to go on Isle of Wight holidays in her childhood, noting the spontaneity of her parents when the family headed off on breaks.
