Isle of Wight gets new tourism boss

A tourist board set up to promote the Isle of Wight as a world-class holiday destination has a new leader, with David Thornton appointed chief executive of Visit Isle of Wight.

He comes to the role after four years as head of marketing for Visit Peak District and Derbyshire and has previously worked for Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Alton Towers, as well as running his own marketing agency which provided services to Merlin Entertainments and others.

According to a report by the Isle of Wight County Press, Mr Thornton released a statement claiming he has been taking Isle of Wight holidays for the last 40 years.

"Visit Isle of Wight's priority is to continue to build on our rightful position as a leading visitor destination," he said, adding it is sure to be a challenge but it is one he is up to taking on in the coming months and years.

Mr Thornton noted: "I now look forward to serving the inspirational places and people that have provided me with such rewarding holidays in the past."

James Berresford, head of England’s tourism marketing body, Visit England, stated everyone at the body is behind the decision to launch Visit Isle of Wight as a Destination Management Organisation.

The body is set to be supported by £3 million of Isle of Wight Council funding over nine years and will also receive help from the private sector to help it to meet its goal.

Liz Walker, Jill Harlow and Oliver Whitehurst are already in place at Visit Isle of Wight and Mr Berresford added Visit England is looking forward to working with the quartet on promoting the Isle of Wight as a top destination for tourists from the UK and further afield.

British documentary photographer, photojournalist and photobook collector Martin Parr recently told the Daily Telegraph that Ventnor on the Isle of Wight is among his top five favourite places in the UK, due to the fact he believes it is the most charming resort on the island.
