Isle of Wight Council relaunches tourism website

A website encouraging individuals to book Isle of Wight holidays has been relaunched by the local council after an overhaul of the site.

The Isle of Wight Council has worked on islandbreaks.co.uk in a bid to attract more people to head to the destination over the course of the summer.

It was noted by the local authority that as many as two-and-a-half million individuals take Isle of Wight holidays every year and this number could be set to increase in 2012 as a result of the launch of the upgraded website this month.

John Metcalfe, deputy director for economy and tourism for the council, pointed out the summer is approaching quickly and it is around now that a lot of families are searching for places to head to for a break.

"We felt the old Island Breaks website needed to be refreshed, especially as more people research their holidays online and more than 60 per cent of travellers make their bookings less than three months before they travel," he said, adding a theme of The Great British Island has been put in place.

This coincides with events such as the London Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee celebrations that will be taking place in the UK over the course of the year.

Mr Metcalfe explained this was chosen as the local authority wanted to show off the "uniqueness" of the island in order to persuade people to book Isle of Wight holidays in 2012.

Weird facts and figures about the island can be viewed on the website, while there is also information about famous people who have lived on the Isle of Wight.

"We are delighted with the new look and feel of the site, which makes booking and planning a trip to our great British island much easier," said Mr Metcalfe.

One celebrity who recently headed to the Isle of Wight was Radio 1 breakfast DJ Chris Moyles, who was pictured in the Isle of Wight County Press enjoying his island break.
