Island art

The Isle of Wight might be small, but it's something of a hotbed for artistic types, who take inspiration from its pretty landscapes and welcoming people.

No matter what time you visit, there's bound to something creative going on - whether live or in exhibition form.

This month, Freshwater Library is playing host to a display of paintings and drawings of local people and places created by resident artists Barry Ecuyer - giving visitors a chance to get a local's perspective on the landscapes they'll encounter.

The exhibition is free and is open between Monday and Wednesday and on Fridays and Saturdays. Times vary, so check with the library before you travel.

Also included in the exhibition will be a number of Ecuyer's nude portraits from his life drawing sessions at Dimbola Museum and Galleries - the former home of another of the island's creatives, Julia Margaret Cameron.

If you'd rather be creating something yourself than walking round galleries, why not book a place on one of these classes. Taking place between 7pm and 9pm, individual sessions cost £7.50. You needn't be the next Picasso, with all abilities welcome and Barry on hand to share his tips.

More landscape-oriented artists might prefer instead to head to two of Ecuyer's favourite spots on the island: Tennyson Down and Freshwater Bay.

Tennyson Down, a 147m-high hill at the west end of the island, is also a top spot for rambling and has featured in the Telegraph as its 'Walk of the Week'. Visitors have the chance to glimpse sea birds, peregrine falcons and ravens nesting in the cliffs and spot rare plants, such as the hoary stock and ox tongue broomrape.

Freshwater Bay, which is overlooked by Dimbola Lodge, was the home of another of the island's famous creative residents - the poet Lord Tennyson, after whom the hill was named.

There's surely no better place to get your creative juices flowing, whether you're a writer, painter or photographer.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801663197-ADNFCR
