IOW small businesses hoping for a festive boost

With Christmas just around the corner, now’s the time that all the present buying begins in earnest - something that shops in the Isle of Wight are hoping to capitalise on this weekend.

December 7th has been labelled Small Business Saturday by the island’s council in a bid to support local firms and encourage more people to buy their goods.

All of the participating businesses will be doing something to mark the occasion this weekend, with many stores planning to offer one-off discounts to encourage people to come through the door - and anyone who doesn’t live on the island can get involved too by heading over for the day on a ferry.

To help boost the event further, the Isle of Wight Council is providing free parking in all of its car parks across the island, enabling people to shop for longer without having to worry about putting more money in the meter.

Councillor Shirley Smart, Isle of Wight council cabinet member for tourism and economy, told the Isle of Wight County Press Online that the aim of the initiative is to “encourage lots of people to visit towns and villages and buy locally for Christmas”.

She added: “This is a wonderful opportunity to support local business ahead of Christmas.”

So far, more than 100 businesses have announced their intention take part, with Isle of Wight Radio’s website providing a comprehensive list of what’s going on.

Stores such as Shared Earth, Number Twenty, Moda Accessories and Blue by the Sea are offering a 10 per cent discount on all purchases on Saturday, while many cafes and restaurants are running food and drink promotions throughout the day.

Businesses from Cowes, Newport, Ryde, Bay South and West Wight are all getting involved, so no matter where you are on the island, you should be able to take advantage of these wonderful shopping opportunities and bag a few bargains as you pick up some more of your festive gifts.

Isle of Wight Radio is also running its own promotion to support the scheme - namely free advertising slots throughout December 7th for any of the participating companies.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801668122-ADNFCR
