Butterfly expert speaks about Isle of Wight holiday

Isle of Wight holidays could be popular among people hoping to spot butterflies after an expert highlighted the island as a great place to check out the creatures.

Published author Patrick Barham explained that he headed to the Isle of Wight with his girlfriend Lisa in a last-minute decision and spotted his first butterfly shortly after arriving on the island.

Writing for the Express, he said: "Ten yards from an ice-cream van on the clifftops we found dozens of the rare Glanville Fritillary, the only British butterfly named after a real person, Eleanor Glanville, who discovered this species in the 17th century."

Barkham added that Ms Glanville was compared to a gypsy as she used to wander around the countryside looking for butterflies.

He noted that during his Isle of Wight holiday he saw 57 Purple Emperors, a breed he had never had the fortune to spot before.

Butterfly and Fountain World is likely to be a popular destination for tourists on the island interested in the creatures, as it is home to hundreds of butterflies.
