British holidaymakers staying in the UK
Thu 18 Feb 2010
Destinations such as the Isle of Wight could be popular with British holidaymakers this year, as more and more people are taking their breaks in the UK.
According to official figures, there was a 15 per cent drop in the number of trips abroad made by UK residents between December 2008 and the final month of 2009.
Mike Saul, head of hospitality and leisure at Barclays, said this shows that a growing number of Britons are choosing to enjoy the attractions the UK has to offer rather than travel overseas.
"It seems the staycation trend has life in it," he commented.
"Value-seeking Britons continue to holiday at home in strong numbers."
Mr Saul said this is having a number of economic advantages, as it is fuelling growth in the hospitality and leisure industries.
He added that the weak sterling is also making the UK an attractive destination for people from overseas.
This comes shortly after the Isle of Wight Council encouraged people to visit the island this Easter to enjoy a range of family-friendly attractions.
