Ash cloud fears may boost Isle of Wight caravanning holidays

Caravanning holidays on the Isle of Wight could receive a boost in popularity this summer as Britons are afraid an overseas trip could be disrupted by volcanic ash.

Following the eruption of a volcano in Iceland, flights have been disrupted across Europe, with many holidaymakers left stranded abroad or unable to fly out to their chosen destination.

Marcus Dubois, editor of Caravantimes.co.uk, said caravanning holidays could become more popular due to the media exposure they have received over the last couple of years during the recession.

He said: "Since the chaos surrounding the volcanic ash cloud, we've seen a number of families who would normally take budget holidays abroad consider caravan holidays."

Mr Dubois added that the Caravanning and Camping Club has taken 23 per cent more bookings this year compared to 2009 so far.

People wishing to take a caravanning holiday on the Isle of Wight this summer will find sites in all the island's major settlements, such as Cowes, Ventnor, Shanklin and Newport.
