John Giddings: Pink Floyd turned down Isle of Wight Festival slot

Pink Floyd were once approached by the organiser of the Isle of Wight Festival to play at the event, but they rejected the offer.

John Giddings revealed he made the proposal to Roger Waters shortly after the band came off stage at a show in Earls Court in London, but the star said the group would not perform.

Speaking to The Music Venue, Mr Giddings stated he has seen the group "a million times" and owns all of their albums, but was unable to persuade them to play at the Isle of Wight Festival.

He told the website his wife said he looked "crestfallen" and "stupid" after his offer had been turned down by Waters.

Mr Giddings has previously said he would love to book Pink Floyd for the festival, so the door remains open for the group should they ever reform once more.

The curator of the Isle of Wight Festival also revealed some of his favourite new bands, which included The Vaccines, who will play on the main stage at the event this June.

Band of Skills, Switchfoot and Zulu Winter were also singled out for praise by the organiser of the bash, which is this year to be headlined by Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

"I listen to rock music from past, present and future. I like Razorlight, Snow Patrol, I've always thought The Manic Street Preachers are great," said Mr Giddings, who added Primal Scream are going to be playing in the Big Top and it is going to be "wild".

He added he usually gets to see between 20 and 25 bands over the course of the weekend, although he is looking out for the reaction of the audience as much as he is enjoying the music for himself, which may help him to decide about future bookings for the festival.

One of the acts Mr Giddings is most looking forward to seeing at the 2012 Isle of Wight Festival was named as Tinie Tempah, the British hip-hop star who has had hit singles with tracks including Pass Out, Written In The Stars, Invincible and Wonderman.

He compared him to the US superstar Jay-Z, due to the fact he has a similar ability to control the crowd at his shows, noting: "I really like him - he is a great entertainer."

Mr Giddings also confirmed most of the acts he books to play at the island-based bash are ones that he would choose to listen to himself, "because if you are going to succeed or fail you should do it on your own terms, you shouldn't do it on what someone else has told you".

One of the bands to watch at the Isle of Wight Festival this summer could be Enter Shikari, who play on the Friday night, the curator revealed.

He compared the group to The Cure and Chase and Status who have previously performed at the event and "tore the place apart", predicting a similar outcome when they take to the stage in the Big Top after the likes of Lana Del Rey and Kelis perform in the arena earlier in the day.

"I just like to see people enjoying themselves because music is a shared experience and even if you don’t know the person standing next to you, you can talk to a complete stranger because you are sharing the same experience," added the organiser of the festival, who noted one of his favourite memories is of standing at the ferry port watching revellers heading back to the mainland, which brought a tear to his eye as they cheered for him.

Acts performing at the Isle of Wight Festival - which runs from June 21st to 24th - include Elbow, Example, Madness, Feeder, The Darkness, Biffy Clyro and Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds.
