Isle of Wight Festival to host smoking roadshow

Revellers attending the Isle of Wight Festival this summer will be able to get information about smoking during their time at the event.

More than 50,000 tickets have already been sold for the festival, which is just two weeks away and will be headlined by Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

According to a report by the Isle of Wight County Press, people will be asked what they think about the introduction of standardised packaging for tobacco products.

It is claimed this would put young people off from taking up smoking early in their lives.

The Isle of Wight NHS Trust is urging individuals to make their views heard on the Department of Health's proposals at the festival in two weeks' time.

IW NHS Trust director Dr Mark Pugh said: "The facts speak for themselves. People who smoke die earlier and smoking causes significant illness and suffering. We must do all we can to prevent young people taking up this terrible habit."

If the proposals get the green light, all tobacco products would be sold in the same type of packs, with identical colours and fonts on the items.

Views on the plans are being sought until July 10th and after this deadline, a decision on whether or not to press forward will be made.

The plain packaging roadshow will be at the Isle of Wight Festival on the Friday of the event (June 22nd) and will also be heading to Newport on the following day.

Music lovers will be looking forward to catching acts such as Jessie J, Madness, Example, Feeder, The Vaccines and Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds at this year's festival.

They are joined on the bill by bands including The Charlatans, Elbow, Biffy Clyro, Band of Skulls, Noah and the Whale, Big Country and Tinie Tempah.
