Hawkwind recall failed Isle of Wight jam with Hendrix

Hawkwind have revealed that they came close to performing with Jimi Hendrix at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival.

The prog icons were performing at Canvas City, an area of the event, when Hendrix heard their music as he was passing.

Guitarist Dave Brock explained that the rock legend asked them to jam with him later on.

But he told the Newbury Weekly News that it was not to be as events took over.

"The generator failed and the canvas started collapsing. There were all these people, all tripping on acid, trying to hold it up," he said.

Brock stated that the ensuing chaos meant that Hawkwind never did get the chance to play with Jimi Hendrix, who died just a short time after his famous show at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival.

Tickets are currently on sale for the 2011 Isle of Wight Festival, through ferry operator Red Funnel, with Pulp on the bill as well as headlining acts Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon and Kasabian.
